March is a graphic novel by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin. Students are expected to read the first book in the trilogy (the school will provide each student with a copy of the text before summer). The novel is based on the extraordinary life of John Lewis, a United States congressman who has played a pivotal role in our country’s civil rights movement.
Reading: Students are required to read the first book of the March trilogy AND one of the following additional reads:
This Boy’s Life by Tobias Wolff
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
Swallow the Ocean by Laura Flynn (tentative Book Love discussion text)
The Color of Water by James McBride (tentative Book Love discussion text)
Evaluation: Students should be prepared to discuss March through oral and written discussion upon their return to school in August. For the additional read, the students will complete the “Summer Reading Assessment” form (attached below) OR participate in a Book Love discussion (details forthcoming).
