Quia - What is it?

Why is it effective?

  • Collection of Shared activities and quizzes that can be imported & edited

  • Simple and effective means of formatively assessing students

  • Easily setup quick start up / Exit activities

  • Resources can be created and shared within a Network (Eled, KMS, KHS)
  • Can integrate audio, images & links to other sites
  • SAVES TIME by eliminating the need to grade quizzes, data stored within program

How do I get started?

  1. Identify the need based upon instructional objective.
  2. Login to Quia,
  3. Click on Shared Activities along left menu and search for content that would be applicable to an upcoming unit of instruction
  4. After you've located an Activity or Quiz that you can use, click on "Copy this to my account" under Tools and begin editing within your account
  5. OR, create a quiz or activity from the beginning, (see 16 types of Quia Activities)

KCSD Connect - What is it?

Why is it effective?

How do I get started?

  1. Identify the need based upon instructional objective.
  2. Login to KCSD CONNECT
  3. Navigate to your wiki by searching by building or by name, (using the search feature in the top right corner). Make sure you are logged in.
    1. If you don't have a wiki, notify Dan ASAP. 
  4. On your wiki homepage, post a Comment at the bottom of a prioritized list of what you would like to accomplish & be prepared to discuss game plan with Dan.

How do I get started?

  1. Identify the need based upon instructional objective. What are your goals?
  2. Go to Overview Site and select the "getting started guide" at the bottom of each for the App you would like to focus on.
  3. Create a file and share with someone else in the group as a test when complete.
    1. If you have a file that already exists, you can click and drag into you Google Drive account & convert to a Google Doc
  4. Modify the Share settings based upon the goal of the activity & post the link for students to access
  5. May want to create a folder with your class to manage student Docs if they are sharing back responses
  6. Be prepared to discuss your game plan with Dan.

  • KHS Interactive Book Report Project (Tentative Workflow)
    1. Signup for free WeVideo account using District email, explore program, gather photos and work on storyboard.

    3. Save the photos to Google Drive folder to easily transition into WeVideo 
      1. Assign due date within Google Classroom (have students upload videos at least 1 day prior) \
      2. 1 week prior to actual recording, review storyboard and provide feedback so recording can begin next week via individual conferences integrating skills and objectives

SMART Exchange, K-12

SMART Exchange - What is it?

Why is it effective?

  • Interactive resources are standards based and created & reviewed by educators 

  • All content can be easily previewed, downloaded and modified in any way

  • Notebooks can be utilized on any interactive board 

  • Interactive means of introducing concepts and engaging students

  • Integration of audio & video, in addition to linking to online resources

  • Notebooks can be exported and posted to wiki for later reference, absent students, etc.

  • Resources can be easily shared among team members

  • District subscription to SMART Notebook for the next 3 years

  • SAVES TIME by eliminating the need to start Notebook from scratch
  • Already installed on all Teacher laptops

How do I get started?

  3. Search for a Notebook for an upcoming unit of instruction and download to your desktop
    1. Users can search without having an account
    2. Begin editing the Notebook and bring your questions to the session

Schoology Learning Management System, K-12

Schoology - What is it?

 

  • The KMS and KHS Personalized Learning Teams, (PLT's), dedicated most of January through April 2017 to exploring both the Canvas and Schoology Learning Management Systems, and based upon the feedback from those who responded, Schoology emerged as the clear choice. 
  • We've secured Schoology licenses and support for the 2017-18 school year for all KMS and KHS staff and students, and have since expanded to include several elementary teachers and students, which was not anticipated before the 2018-19 school year. Over the summer the District conducted monthly, collaborative sessions to help get teachers started with planning and organizing Schoology courses for the upcoming school year.

Why is it effective?

  • Most of the top priorities identified by the group were related to Skyward, Google Apps and curriculum integration, as well as creating a "one-stop shop" for teachers, parents and students.

How do I get started?

  • KMS and KHS Student & Teacher accounts have been created and courses available.
    • Students will see courses listed once they have logged into Schoology
  • Elementary Teacher accounts created, (based upon increasing demand), and student accounts created upon request. Teachers must manually create courses at the elementary level

Login Process:

  • Dashboard > Schoology > District Login (DO NOT include @kcsd or @bluedemons)
  • If unable to login, email Dan and Kevin with student name, ID & grad year
  • Teachers submit a work order requesting a Schoology account and directions for Getting Started, including how to create and organize content as well as add students.

Quick Tips & Tricks

BEFORE having students access Schoology for the first time;

  • Check to assure the correct Grading Period is listed (bottom of left menu)
    • To change; Course Options > Info > Grading Periods
  • Check the Gradebook to assure student list is accurate
  • Login using a few student accounts to assure access

Moving Forward:

Discovery Ed (Formerly United Streaming), K-12

Discovery Ed - What is it?

Why is it effective?

  • Extensive resources including streaming & downloadable media, virtual field trips and lesson plans

  • Content organized by standards, instructional level, content area

  • Easily save, organize and manage content within Discovery Ed
  • Videos broken into segments for simple downloading and integration into instruction and/or shared with students
  • Ability to create classes, assign activities and quizzes to students and monitor progression
  • All KCSD Teachers and Staff have access to the resource via CCIU
  • Web-based, device agnostic, accessible 24/7

How do I get started?

  1. Identify the need based upon instructional objective.
  2. Go to Discovery Education.com
  3. Explore the resources available and save worthwhile resources to My Content to access later
  4. Be prepared to discuss your game plan with Dan.
