“The differentiation is what the teacher does, and personalization is what the student does.”

-Karen Beerer, VP of Professional Development at Discovery Ed

When applied correctly, personalized learning can move mountains for students. It means that assignments and instruction are tailored to individual students’ interests, needs, and skills. It allows the teacher to bring in more robust, useful, and varied material into the classroom. It opens up probabilities for strategic groupings to allow students to learn better from one another.

-Kelli Marshall, "Why Personalized Learning is Important"

"Allowing students to choose a topic of further study within a unit is a good start; you can also allow them to design assessment projects that harness their strongest skills to show their learning."

-Elizabeth Trach, "Know Your Edu; Personalized Learning vs. Differentiated Instruction"

Technology — when employed properly and meaningfully — can help educators deliver differentiated, individualized and personalized instruction. It can help facilitate timely interventional responses, involve parents more in their children’s learning, empower school leaders with data to support teachers, and either break down problems or make those problems more complex, based on the individual needs of the student. It’s up to savvy teachers to connect the appropriate tools with the right students.
